Llwyn Nwydog Farm nestles in a quiet part of the Vale of Glamorgan near Cardiff, South Wales UK. Six stone cottages have been attractively and sympathetically converted to an exceptionally high standard from the 19th century and earlier farm buildings adjoining the owners' 16th century farmhouse. At the turn of the century Llwyn Nwydog Farm was one of the largest farms in the area, being over 100 acres. Now reduced in size to 78 acres, the farm has been preserved to provide pleasant walks through the moorland, woodland and meadows, which have not suffered from modern intensive farming. They remain unspoilt retaining many of their wild flowers, grasses, butterflies and wildlife. The farming activity now consists of a small flock of breeding Welsh mountain sheep, a few breeding Welsh Black cows, along with chickens and geese. Five acres of young native deciduous trees have also recently been planted. The grounds also provide ample opportunity for relaxation, picnics, sunbathing (weather permitting!), ball games and exploring. For the fisherman, a visit to the local Trout and Coarse Fishing Lakes next door could revive memories of the one that got away!
The cottages and farm house are accessed off the A4222 via a long private drive to the car park which has more than adequate safe parking for our guests. As you approach the cottages, partly hidden behind the large Scot's Pines, you cannot fail to notice the stunning view of the mountains, which act as a back drop to Llwyn Nwydog. These are the gate way to the Welsh Valleys and the beautiful Brecon Beacons beyond. The enclosed grounds and long access drive also provide many of our guests with young children, the added comfort that they can enjoy the freedom of the grounds in relative safety. Around the courtyard the old farm buildings have been tastefully refurbished, with care and attention to detail, retaining many of the original features. Locally made pine furniture has been used throughout the cottages to compliment the soft furnishings, this combined with the Welsh Tourist Boards' high specification, which includes fully fitted kitchens, gas central heating, flat screen television, DVD player and Freeview, provide the modern comforts our guests require, whilst retaining the old charm of the converted farm buildings. Bed linen is provided in all cottages and a laundry room offers the facilities of washing machines and tumble driers.
Quarry Cottage adjoins Wayside Cottage and has accommodation for two people. It is the smallest cottage that we offer yet still provides all of the facilities of our larger accommodation. The ground floor is open plan with the kitchen enjoying a northerly aspect, looking out across the rear lawns and the fields on the opposite side of the road. A south facing sitting/dining room offers views over the patio, lawns and hay meadow.
On the first floor is an attractively furnished double bedroom with a south facing view and en-suite bathroom facilities.
Fern Cottage, this spacious two person cottage has a double bedroom under the eaves, en-suite bathroom and a gallery landing over the lounge. Below is a cosy lounge with access onto the main courtyard and a south facing picture window with a door leading onto the front lawns and patio. The open-plan kitchen and dining room are well equipped and adjoin the lounge. The front lawn has a number of large Scot's Pines which were planted to protect the original farm and its outbuildings from the prevailing winds. This was a common practice on farms in the Vale of Glamorgan and visitors staying in the cottages are now able to enjoy watching the wildlife attracted to these large trees to feed on the cone seeds and insects. Beyond and to the south lies a 6 acre hay meadow and the entrance drive. The kitchen and bedroom at the rear of the cottage look out over the paved and planted courtyard and towards the Welsh valleys and the North.
Heather Cottage, a cosy four person cottage faces east with pleasant views onto the courtyard and adjoining moorland and woodland . The main door opens into the sitting / dining room where attractive use has been made of the ceiling, existing roof beams and exposed stone walls. A gas fire and central heating adds to the all round comfort of the cottage. The well equipped kitchen forms part of the open -plan dining room and lounge. A hallway leads to the bathroom with w.c., basin and bath/shower ,opposite the bathroom is a bunk bedroom which looks out onto the courtyard and at the end of the hall is a double bedroom with a westerly aspect looking out over the rear lawns and the cottages own patio.
Primrose Cottage, slightly larger than Heather Cottage, but still with accommodation for four people, Primrose Cottage has a sitting/dining room where again every effort has been made to maximise the effect of the large 'A' frame trusses used to construct the roof on this corner of the building which was once the milking parlour.
The high ceilings and black beams combined with the original stone walls and large picture window looking onto the patio and lawns make this a very comfortable room to relax in. At a slightly lower level and leading from the dining room is the well equipped oak kitchen which has a southerly aspect looking out onto the courtyard. The Cottage has two double bedrooms with one enjoying access onto the courtyard, whilst the other bedroom looks out to the west over the lawns. A spacious bathroom with w.c., basin and bath/shower compliment this pleasant corner cottage.
Holly Cottage is one of our most popular cottages and is suitable for wheelchairs. This self-catering accommodation for four people consists of a large double bedroom and a large twin bedroom with a north facing aspect over open countryside and views of the Welsh Valleys in the distance.

The bathroom is fitted with w.c., basin and bath/shower, electric shaver point. Some disabled accessories are available on request. From the sitting room access can be gained onto the patio and lawns.

The open plan ground floor consists of an oak fitted kitchen, dining area and lounge with mainly south facing windows over the lawns and adjoining meadows and woods. At the top of the stairs is a door leading out onto the old stone steps. This provides alternative access onto the cottage's patio and lawn, featuring a stone well which was a source of water for the farm superseding the natural spring that can still be found at the bottom of the wood below the farm house.
On the first floor is the main bathroom, two double bedrooms, one with en-suite cloakroom, and a third bunk bedroom. Access can also be made available into the adjoining Quarry Cottage to provide accommodation for up to eight people, or separate accommodation for 'Gran and Gramp' if required.
