Within the Maritime Quarter itself is Swansea’s Marina which has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag status for its high standards of cleanliness, safety and services. The bars and cafeterias on its perimeter offer a wonderful location for sitting and relaxing and for watching people, yachts, motor cruisers and fishing boats going by. The Maritime Quarter also contains the National Waterfront Museum where you can learn about Wales' maritime and industrial heritage; the Dylan Thomas Centre which celebrates the life and works of Swansea's famous poet; restaurants offering fine dining and relaxed family eating; cafeterias; shops and marine businesses including a sailing school. The newly re-furbished Leisure Centre at the Quarter’s perimeter provides everything the more active amongst us could want from adrenalin-fuelled surfing and water rides to a children’s lagoon and interactive play pool. At its core is a multi-purpose sports and exhibition hall; a four-storey interactive Playzone, and nine-metre climbing wall. It is also home to Wales' biggest fitness arena with a comprehensive range of cutting-edge equipment, two aerobics studios and a relaxing spa and treatments centre - all available to visitors as well as members.
The centre of the City of Swansea is only a short walk away from the Maritime Quarter and contains all the stores you would expect to see in a city of its size as well as a fine market, galleries, museums, parks, cinemas, theatres, casinos, and night clubs.
Swansea Bay's sandy beach sweeps from the marina entrance at the mouth of the River Tawe to Mumbles Head and is approximately 5 miles in length. A promenade runs along the edge of the bay and is enjoyed by cyclists, runners and walkers who appreciate its flatness as well as the dramatic views it offers. Midway between Swansea and Mumbles, is Blackpill Lido, which, with its caféteria and paddling pools, is ideally located for quenching the thirst and providing cooling relief on a hot summer's day. During the holiday season a land train is available to take passengers from here, along the seafront, to Verdi's ice cream parlour in the Mumbles. The bay is ideal for watersports of all kinds, with national sailing competitions held every year.
Mumbles is a delightful seaside village and often referred to as the 'Gateway to Gower'. It offers several outstanding restaurants, a couple of small art galleries, locally crafted products and exhibitions, some designer shops, a crazy golf course, a pier with an arcade and rides and an indoor skating rink. For those looking for more of an adrenalin rush there are boat trips available to view the outstanding beauty of the Gower peninsular from the sea. Both Catherine Zeta Jones with her husband Michael Douglas, and the singer - Bonnie Tyler - have chosen to have homes in this resort town.
The beautiful blue flag beaches of the Gower including Bracelet Bay, Caswell Bay, Langland Bay and Port Eynon are all easily accessible from here.
Swansea's Maritime Quarter is an ideal location for a long summer's holiday or for a shorter winter break. Situated between the beautiful Gower peninsular - designated Britain’s first area of outstanding natural beauty - and the waterfall country of the Neath River Valley you can be sure to uncover a diversity of scenery which will offer something for everyone.
If walking is your pleasure there are numerous options from easy strolls on the promenade and in the local parklands of Clyne Gardens, Cwmdonkin and Singleton to more energetic rambles along coastal paths or river banks. The numerous sandy beaches of the Gower include the family friendly with facilities and life-guards close by; small bays accessed by long walks; long windy beaches to suit the surfing enthusiasts and hidden gems with unusual rock formations and castles atop the cliffs. Whether you are a surfer, photographer or sun worshipper you will find something for you here.
Pleasure cyclists can enjoy an easy route like the 6 mile route along the old tramway to Mumbles Pier or a more challenging ride for the confident cyclist from Swansea Marina to Rhossili. Serious mountain bikers, on the other hand, can opt for one of the 4 world class trails in the Afan Forest Park: apparently, one of the ten best places to ride "before you die"! (What Mountain Bike Magazine, Dec. 2004)
The golf enthusiast will find that there are a number of world class courses in the region including the 3 championship golf courses of the Celtic Manor Resort which is the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup and home of The Celtic Manor Wales Open, and the Jack Nicklaus designed championship golf course at the Machynys Peninsular Golf and Country Club. Other local golf clubs in beautiful settings include those at Clyne, Earlswood, Fairwood Park, Gower, Langland Bay, Pennard and Swansea Bay.
To learn to sail or improve your sea faring skills you can book a place on one of the courses on offer with one of the many local sailing schools including the All Points West Sea School; Mumbles Yacht Club; or with Watersports4all. For further fun on the water you might like to try surfing, kayaking, kite surfing, wake boarding, coasteering or water skiing. Other land based activities include horse-riding, caving, abseiling and archery.
Swansea has many more attractions to entertain the family including a tropical glass house with over 1,000 varieties of rare and unusual plants; a tenpin bowling alley; a chocolate factory, a heritage centre, and castles such as those at Oystermouth, Oxwich, Pennard and Weobly. Carreg Cennen, Dinefwr and Kidwelly castles - although further afield - are also worth a visit with the latter often holding medieval events during the holiday season. The Neath and Afan Valleys also have plenty to offer including the famous and award winning National Showcave Centre and Margam Park
