The Pilstyes, Haywards Heath, Sussex
The Pilstyes Cottage (suitable for a Honeymoon, special occasion
or for discerning people who demand a higher standard of accommodation than is
normally available for renting) has been totally redecorated and refitted but
still retains an ‘olde worlde atmosphere’ of a bygone age.
Living room (double aspect overlooking both the High Street and courtyard at the
rear of the property) has an heavily oak timbered ceiling. Walk-in cupboard for
coats, shoes, ironing board and vacuum cleaner. Comfortable chairs, table and
four dining room chairs and a flat screen TV, Freeview box with digital radio and
CD player with an assortment of CDs. (New photo to be published shortly)
The kitchen (overlooking the rear of the cottage) includes sink, oven and hob,
microwave, fridge, washing machine and dishwasher. All cutlery and crockery,
pots and pans are in a new condition and are of an excellent quality. There is
sufficient for six place settings.
The back door leads to a small court yard for your private use. There are four
garden chairs and a table.
Stairs lead up to the first floor, which includes a 4-Poster double bedded room
(the Elizabethan Room) and a bathroom with toilet, wash basin, bath with
aqualisa shower and heated towel rail. Again exposed ceiling beams and wall
timbers create a wonderful atmosphere.
Stairs lead up to the second floor twin bedded room (Eliza’s Room) which has a
low pitched ceiling with exposed oak beams and is divided by two ancient
V-shaped oak timbers. This room is not suitable for the physically challenged.
All the rooms in our cottage are very clean, comfortable and prettily decorated
in keeping with the period of the house. Each bedroom is equipped with a
hairdryer and clock radio. All beds are of good quality and new condition. It
has comprehensive fire precautions plus a security system. It has fully fitted
carpets throughout.
The Pilstyes Cottage annexe with its romantic Elizabethan 4-Poster Bedroom is
let on a self catering basis. It is suitable for up to four people, having two
bedrooms, one with 4-Poster double bed and one with two single beds. It is
generally considered that the cottage is unsuitable for toddlers but a
babe-in-arms or older children will find it most comfortable.
In the main house we have a double bedded room with en-suite shower room.
OUR ACCOMMODATION IS A NON-SMOKING HOUSE and WE DO NOT ACCEPT PETS.
Although Roy and Carol Pontifex live on site in the main part of The Pilstyes,
the cottage has its own private entrance gate from the High Street (to the left
of the house) and access is gained to the ground floor through the front door
into the living room. There is a small kitchen (back door leads out to the
terraced sitting area private to the cottage) and two bedrooms and one bathroom
are on first and second floor levels. Parking is available in a public car park
to the rear of the Tiger just two minutes away from the house.
Pilstyes is a Grade II listed village house believed to have been built around 1575. It is arranged as a main house with an attached cottage. (The cottage is let as a holiday home and we let one double bedded room with an en-suite shower room on a bed and breakfast basis in the main house.)
The house has painted brick walls on a tall sandstone plinth, partly tile hung with a roof of mellow Sussex clay tiles and Horsham stone slab slates. The Pilstyes combines many period features such as exposed wall and ceiling oak timbers and leaded light windows to the front elevation. "It is the quintessential English cottage that everyone dreams about".
The Pilstyes is situated in the north end of Lindfield in an enviable position close to all the village amenities. The name The Pilstyes means Pond in a field. The house next to ours is called Roaches after the fish in the pond and the house on the corner of the street is called Spongs which means corner of a field. These names were given to the houses hundreds of years ago probably to houses standing here before the present ones and any trace of its fish, pond and field have long gone.
In fact, the picturesque High Street of Lindfield is well known for its variety
of period houses and cottages. The High Street has brick pavements and grass
verges on both sides interspersed with lime trees. The village amenities include
an excellent selection of shops, an historic church, a village pond with swans
and ducks and a large common. Promenading up and down the High Street is a
pleasurable occupation especially on a warm summer’s afternoon followed by tea
in one of the tea rooms.
Even more pleasurable is a early evening stroll followed by a pint in the Red Lion. (There are 5 pubs within easy walking distance with three cooking lunches and suppers.) The shops include butcher, chemists, supermarket, newsagents, bakers, greengrocers, bookshop, violin maker, shoe shop, dress shops, toy shops, pretty present shops, art galleries, florists etc
