We are just five miles from the historic city of Wells the smallest city in England, with it’s beautiful gothic cathedral also the Bishops palace with it’s moat and beautiful gardens. Maybe you will see the famous swans that ring a bell to be fed.

Wells Cathedral in Somerset, is the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. It is technically only the second smallest cathedral city in England, since the City of London has a smaller resident population. The wells that the Romans knew, re-dedicated to Saint Andrew, still spring abundantly in the Bishop’s garden and fill the moat of the Bishop’s Palace, where the famous bell-ringing Mute Swans pull on chains attached below a window to a small bell, for a reward of food.

Wells is the host city for an annual Festival of Literature which attracts many eminent writers from around the globe. This is normally held in October.

Close by is the world famous Wookey Hole Cave. Which has many other attractions on its large site.

Glastonbury is also well worth a visit if you are in the area. It has many places to visit such as the Rural Life Museum and the Chalice Well Garden. There are many associations with Chalice Well covering countless centuries; it is a timeless and sacred place, full of legend, symbolism and atmosphere, a place whose history has no beginning. It is situated at the foot of the world famous Glastonbury Tor which itself is well worth the climb on a good day for its extended views across Somerset.

Bath Abbey is not simply a museum of past treasures or a concert hall. It is first and foremost the home of a thriving family of believers who regularly gather to worship God and to find inspiration for their daily living.

Bath also boasts an excellent modern Spa facility with its rooftop pool. Situated right in the heart of the city as is its historically famous sister “The Roman Baths”.

It has many wonderful parks and open spaces for picnics. For walkers there is an excellent canal system which runs through the city, allowing good flat access.

It is host to a well renowned annual music festival held around May/June.

A regular bus service across our village green will take you to Wells just 5 miles away or to Bath 15 miles. If you wish to drive to Bath there is a park and ride scheme which does now operate a height restriction for larger vehicles. In the village we have a shop/post office and two pubs for good food. Just 1 mile from the cottage is a well supplied farm shop and Hartleys Cafe Bistro which comes highly recommended. A very good local golf club within 1 mile of the village.

Many of Somerset's principle towns hold weekly markets selling amongst other things high quality locally sourced produce. Wells: Wednesdays/Saturdays. Glastonbury: Tuesdays. Shepton Mallet: Fridays. For example.
