The Shear self catering holiday cottage stands in pleasant gardens surrounded by farm land. Its situation is probably unrivalled in Ludlow, South Shropshire, facing due south and having superb views over rolling countryside. Set amid green fields and narrow country lanes which are abound with flowers and wildlife, you will probably struggle to find other holiday cottages in Shropshire which have similar characteristics. Pet dogs are also welcome.
The cottage, whilst joined to the farmhouse, is completely self contained with its own entrance leading from an open courtyard with plenty of room for parking. Sleeping 4 + 2 + cot, it is furnished to a very high standard throughout. It has every modern comfort yet maintains its warm period character.
The gardens surrounding the house have extensive well kept lawns, herbaceous borders and shrubberies. A terrace provides an ideal spot for a quiet read or early evening drink. Garden furniture and a barbeque are provided.
The entrance hall with the adjoining cloakroom and w.c. leads into a beautiful timber framed sitting room with inglenook fireplace complete with original bread oven and cooking crane, now fitted with a wood burning stove. The room is furnished in keeping with its period, but also includes colour television, video and a small snooker table.
The kitchen, which is also timber framed, seats six comfortably around an old pine table. It has fitted units, electric cooker, fridge washing machine, microwave, freezer and dish washer. Glasses, cutlery, cooking utensils, toaster, electric iron etc, are all provided. A high chair is also available.
The cottage has full oil fired central heating. Electricity is recorded by a meter and is payable on departure.
The large bedroom on the first floor has twin beds and is furnished in mahogany, adjacent to it there is a bathroom with bath, walk in shower, wash basin and w.c.
On the second floor is another large room with a king size bed and en suite bathroom.
All the beds have duvets, and have electric under blankets. Linen is included. Two occasional folding beds are available and also a cot. No linen is provided for these
The Shear is a tidy, well kept farm of 40 acres surrounding the farmhouse and cottage. Sheep are the main enterprise, lambing during March and April. We very much enjoy interest from visitors.
Dogs are welcome. There is a kennel with run for occasional use. (See Picture Gallery)
Those interested in gardening will find The Shear has a special appeal. The gardens, reflecting the owners interest, are well stocked with a large variety of interesting trees, plants and shrubs. The area boasts many famous gardens which are open to the public and has an abundance of nurseries and plant centres within easy reach.
There are many excellent country pubs within a few miles, most serve both restaurant and bar meals at reasonable prices and welcome children.
Tenbury Wells, about three miles to the south, is a pleasant
small town on the River Teme. It has preserved its market town character and
local trades people are anxious to serve you with most of your every day needs.
The town has a swimming pool, fishing on the River Teme and several riding
schools in the vicinity which cater for children or adults, beginners or
experts.
The historic town of Ludlow is about 7 miles away and offers the visitor a host of interest from historic buildings, good shopping and antiques galore, to golf, swimming, fishing and a lovely N.H. racecourse. The well known Ludlow Festival, famous for its Shakespeare in Ludlow Castle, takes place each year during late June and early of July.
The area is probably one of the most unspoilt parts of England and you will find a visit a rewarding experience, which you will wish to repeat again and again. Whilst away from the traffic and bustle of every day life, it is within easy reach of many interesting places to visit, Leominster, Ironbridge, Hereford, Worcester, Shrewsbury or the hills of Wales, The Malverns or the Long Mynd.
