The self catering cottages are ideal for couples and have only recently been built to the highest specifications. Surrounded by two acres of lovely gardens which contain several fish ponds, woodland walk, a fast flowing stream and a profusion of flowers. Due to the tremendous variation in the landscape within several miles of the cottages, a large number of different Birds and wildlife visit our gardens. Situated in Berrynarbor - an ideal centre for exploring North Devon. It is one of Devon's prettiest villages and has been the winner and runner up of " Devon's Best Kept Village" on a number of occasions. The village has also won one of only four R.H.S gold awards given in the whole country. Overlooks the Sterridge Valley - an area designated as one of outstanding natural beauty and is situated on the edge of Exmoor National Park.
Many beautiful Coastal and country walks can be enjoyed straight from the cottage.
Berrynarbor
Close to Combe Martin is the picturesque village of Berrynarbor. Situated at the
coastal end of the beautiful Sterridge Valley, the village is the ideal place
for a relaxing stay. Having won many awards in both "Britain in Bloom"
and "Best Kept Village in Devon" competitions, the attractive well
kept gardens and floral displays are outstanding. Earlier in the year we won the
best kept village award for the whole of the south west which is a wonderful
achievement for such a small community. During September having already won the
local Britain in bloom award last year we were in the finals of the Royal
Horticultural Society national awards. These awards cover the whole spectrum
from small villages to large cities. Berrynarbor won one of only four gold
awards for the whole country and also won an additional discretionary award for
contributing most in the country towards the keep Britain tidy campaign.
Probably because of the profile that our village has received from the various
awards we had a visit to our own garden last year by a research team for
Gardeners World the TV programme. Whether they will return we do not know but
watch this space.
Quaint cottages and narrow streets, together with the 15th Century Manor Hall, and 12th Century Church, add to the rural charm of the village and the traditional pub is a popular place for eating out. There is ample free car parking and easy access from the A399.
Each Spring Bank Holiday the village of Combe Martin holds the " Hunting of the Earl of Rone Festival", a re-enactment of an ancient legend. Today locals dressed as grenadiers, drummers and musicians form a parade led by a Hobby Horse to hunt out the Earl, who rides backwards on a donkey. The Earl is shot by the grenadiers, revived by the Hobby Horse, remounted on his donkey, before being eventually thrown into the sea.
Another annual event is the "Strawberry Fiar", held at the end of June, to celebrate the strawberry season. Strawberries have been grown in the region for centuries and today there are a number of "pick your own" farms which allow visitors to collect their own fruit.
On the coast at Berrynarbor lies the pretty cove of Watermouth, with its gently shelving shoreline and many rock pools. This naturally sheltered harbour provides moorings for pleasure craft and forms part of the Voluntary Marine Nature Reserve, which runs along the length of coastline from Ilfracombe to Combe Martin. Watermouth's other main attraction is Watermouth Castle, one of the largest family tourist attractions in North Devon. Based in and around a castle, there are displays, exhibits and attractions for all age ranges.
We reside in the nearby 'Pink Heather' cottage and happily share our attractive terraced hillside gardens. The two acres of garden contain several fish ponds, woodland walk, a fast flowing stream, and a profusion of flower. There are many quiet spots to picnic or contemplate!
The cottages are cared for personally by the owners Bernard & June, and are comfortably and attractively furnished to a very high standard throughout. The accommodation comprises of:-
The lounge/dining room is of a very reasonable size, with a delightful view of the valley. The room includes sofa, sideboard, table and chairs and a colour television.
Each cottage has an internal stained glass window from the original 'Pink Heather' cottage.
The kitchen, is well fitted to include a fridge, toaster, microwave, electric cooker with grill, tea and coffee making facilities etc. There is a good supply of pots, pans and cutlery.
The stable door at the front of the cottage leads to an enclosed patio area, with garden furniture and a stunning view across the Sterridge Valley. The patio catches the sun most of the day.
The Bathroom is full fitted with a three piece suite including a shower cubicle.
The Bedroom is tastefully decorated and has a double bed with duvet, wardrobe , chest of drawers, bedside tables and radio alarm clock.
We grow our own organic veggies, and in season our guest
are most welcome to purchase them.
Other cottage information
Combe Martin is approx 2.5 miles away with its beach ,shops places to eat and a large car park. It has nearby, reached by the south west coastal footpath, some of the finest scenery including reputably the highest sea cliffs in England. The sea is free of currents and therefore popular for bathing.
Ilfracombe A busy seaside town just 4 miles away. Originally a fishing village, it became the holiday resort of the Victorian era. In recent years it has been blooming once again with the striking Landmark Theatre and Pavilion and the harbour renewal being two of the more recent development s. The harbour improvements have led to increased usage by visiting yachts, local fishing boats and pleasure craft. You can sail from here on a day trip to Lundy our very own Atlantic Island.Boat trips around the coast are also available as are half day fishing trips.
Woolacombe Approx 6 miles away from Pink heather has one of the finest sandy beaches in the west country.3 miles of golden sands with numerous awards. it is clean and tidy with good toilet facilities, first aid and life saving equipment and even a lost child service. Increasingly popular as a surfing Mecca at the far end of the beach. There is adequate beachside parking.
Croyde This award winning sandy beach is just around the corner from Saunton Sands, but because it is smaller it can get crowded. However it is easily accessible, there is plenty of car parking and it is excellent for swimming, surfing, windsurfing etc. The beach is manned with lifeguards. At one end of the beach there is equipment hire, a shop, refreshments and toilets. From here the beach is wheelchair accessible.
Exmoor National Park contains a variety of magnificent landscapes. Although it is one of the smaller National Parks (693 kmē, 267 sq. miles) the central plateau of open moorland is remote and spacious. To the north the moorland terminates in towering cliffs above the Bristol Channel. Rocky headlands, steep wooded ravines, plunging waterfalls and jumbled heaps of fallen rock make this an area of outstanding scenic beauty; it is defined as a Heritage Coast.
Watermouth Castle approximately 1 1/2 miles away and is owned and managed by a family providing a host of fun and entertainment for your family. Within the Castle there are five themes of entertainment. The Castle, Edwardian history you can touch, see and hear. Dungeon labyrinth, there is something different round each corner. Courtyard houses the famous Magical Multi-Coloured Fountain Show. Merrygoland, rides and games in a tranquil setting. Gnome land a village full of little people. An all-in admission price covers all attractions except antique coin operated machines, shop goods and catering outlets.
Over the road from the castle is Watermouth harbour with its many sailing boats. The south west coastal footpath passes through the harbour and is the starting point for wonderful coastal walks in both directions.
Broadsands Beach and cove approx 1.5 miles away is a beautiful sandy cove surrounded by high cliffs. many steep steps lead down to the sheltered beach but it is well worth the effort. A good spot for sea fishing, rock pooling or swimming.
