Harrolds Farm near Tenby (now a six acre holding) until about 1980 was a larger farm - part of The Cresselly Estate. The farmhouse was completely renovated in 1983. However, the original farm outbuildings were largely left un-maintained. When I moved here in February 2000 the land was terribly overgrown with blackthorn and brambles. It took me and a JCB driver more than a fortnight to clear and begin to create the lovely place it is today. We now have four paddocks which we rotate graze with our small flock of Jacob and other sheep. The sheep (and lambs in season) are very tame and will happily come when called, to eat bread or cream crackers!.
The original 1/2 mile farm access lane was so bad when we moved here that it reminded me of a dried up Greek river bed with only one car passing place. Some of our friends would not visit us for fear of damaging their cars! So in 2003 in readiness for the barn conversions project, I had the whole of the lane professionally repaired and tarmaced with four extra car passing places added. At the far end of one of the paddocks - a long way from the cottages - is a small apiary of 6 hives. I have kept bees for over 27 years. During the summer season, If you are interested I will happily show you inside a hive at a mutually convenient time! (I will even lend you a protective veil!). You could always buy a jar of Harrolds Farm honey to take home with you.
The farm outbuilding conversion was started in September 2003 and completed in August 2005. The long barn was once Stables, a cubicle shed for 8 cows, a calf shed, pig sty and cart shed. The 2 storey Granary - originally housed grain upstairs and livestock and a cart below. It was used by the previous owners as a pottery workshop and painting studio. Only one wall of the Granary Cottage is originally remaining from an old implement shed. However, we have used recycled stone from the site to create the authentic old stone cottage that you can see now.
Apart from the first few months, I have project managed the four cottages and have carried out much of the construction and fitting out work myself. The cottages accommodation has been put together with much thought given to create a wonderfully homely character 'home from home' feel which we hope will entice you to return again and again. I have even provided steam irons and ironing boards to save guests from packing their own travel irons!
A large wooden outbuilding has been converted to provide a games room (table tennis, pool and darts). As a very keen gardener I will also be further enhancing the already attractive surroundings with shrubs and raised flower beds. Harrolds is a lovely tranquil place with a superb charm.
