Almost everyone has heard of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, the legendary home of the famous Robin Hood. Once a private hunting ground of Kings, the Royal Forest then covered a vast area spanning 20 miles of the mid-shires of England. Although now much reduced, the Forest retains its ancient splendour and one can imagine Robin and his followers still living amongst the leafy glades. Within the Forest stands the mighty Major Oak, one of the largest and oldest Oak trees in England and said to have hidden Robin Hood and his entire band from the Sheriff of Nottingham's men.
