Welcome to The Old Chapel, a luxury holiday cottage nestling in the North Norfolk countryside a short distance from some of England’s most beautiful beaches.

The English Tourist Council’s VisitBritain described The Old Chapel as “a unique style of accommodation with a distinct wow factor”; the Eastern Daily Press Sunday Magazine called it “a wonderful home packed with character and colour”. Our other visitors seem to agree, and you can read their comments in the cottage guest book.

Our holiday cottage is in the North Norfolk village of Hindolveston, an ideal base for exploring the coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that stretches from Brancaster through Holkham, Wells, Blakeney and Cley to Sheringham. We are also surrounded by National Trust properties such as Blickling and Felbrigg Halls, the Queen’s residence at Sandringham, and Walsingham, England’s most important place of religious pilgrimage.

If you haven’t been to North Norfolk before take a look at our guide to our top ten Norfolk coast and country attractions and our photo gallery of the area. The fresh sea and country air will help you soon work up an appetite, so we also have plenty of information on Norfolk food, whether you’re catering for yourself or eating out at one of the area’s many restaurants.

A luxury self-catering Norfolk holiday cottage with a unique sense of style. With its brilliant blend of the traditional and the modern in an idyllic location, The Old Chapel provides perfect self-catering accommodation in which to relax, and from which to explore the surrounding countryside, villages and nearby sandy beaches.

The holiday cottage consists of a beautifully restored 19th century brick and flint former Primitive Methodist chapel. The original character of the building has been preserved, with the vaulted main body retained as a dramatic open-plan living area reaching to the heavily-beamed roof; this is overlooked by a mezzanine bedroom accessed by a cast iron spiral staircase. Sleeping accommodation is provided by a king size bed in the mezzanine , supplemented by a double sofa-bed in the main living area. In winter the cottage is particularly cosy with a wood burning stove in the corner inglenook fireplace and a very efficient oil-fired modern central heating system, making it an ideal year-round self-catering holiday cottage.

With its oak floor and chapel chairs the accommodation furnishings - including a working harmonium - reflect the building’s origins. These are enhanced by fittings collected by the owner, a photographer based in Moscow, from his international travels, primarily in Russia, the Former Soviet Union, and Central Asia. The cottage is also decorated throughout with a small selection of the photographer’s iconic work for various international publications: prints are available for purchase on request.
The bright and airy fitted kitchen - described by one guest as the best equipped she had ever stayed at - has plenty of work surfaces ideal for self-catering, and is equipped with all modern conveniences, including electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and other facilities. You’ll find everything you need for creating great meals from the amazing produce available locally, whether from the two village farm shops or the range of fine food outlets in the area. And don’t forget to make use of our herb garden outside. We’ll even leave a couple of bottles of locally brewed real ale and a pair of the famous Bray’s Cottage Pork Pies in the fridge to get you in the holiday mood.

The holiday cottage is ideally located for exploring all that North Norfolk has to offer, but if the peaceful lifestyle here leaves you craving 21st century leisure pursuits, don’t worry. The Old Chapel is equipped with broadband wireless internet access, high definition television with Freesat, DVD player, internet telephone, and cabling so that you can just plug your iPod into the hi-fi system. There is also an eclectic selection of games and a good collection of books. Comprehensive details about how to get the most from your holiday in the village and the area can be found in the folder on the bookcase.

Outside there is a newly-planted south-facing patio garden with wildlife pond created by Chelsea Flower Show award winner Jamie Miles that enjoys uninterrupted views of open fields and Hindolveston Wood. The garden is equipped with a barbeque, table and comfortable seating for outside dining: perfect for an al fresco breakfast or communing in the evening with our nearest neighbours, the wild pheasants and barn owls who reside in the adjoining fields. After sunset the cottage benefits from its peaceful rural location, with the clear air and absence of light pollution providing spectacular views of the night sky: British weather permitting.

Immediately to the front of the the cottage there is a private off-road parking area for two cars; and yes, we welcome up to two well behaved dogs. Please note that in common with most religious establishments smoking is not permitted inside The Old Chapel.

This self-catering Norfolk holiday cottage is located on the edge of the unspoiled village of Hindolveston, nestling in the North Norfolk countryside midway between the market town of Fakenham and the Georgian town of Holt, and nine miles from the famed North Norfolk coast.

Hindolveston is a small traditional Norfolk village with a thriving community and an ancient history. The Domesday Book of 1086 describes it as providing accommodation for 3 slaves, 2 horses, 20 cattle, 40 pigs, 40 goats and 2 beehives. The slaves have gone, but the rest of the livestock remain - the 2 horses are still in the field neighbouring the cottage - and after almost a thousand years the village has expanded to provide two farm shops, one in the same lane as The Old Chapel, supplying the freshest of country produce for your day to day needs.

There is a pub and shop in the neighbouring village of Foulsham, and we are only six miles from Fakenham, Reepham and the excellent Georgian shopping town of Holt. The latter (and indeed the other towns) are still lucky enough to have superb independent butchers and greengrocers as well as unobtrusive supermarkets for the more mundane things!

On the first Saturday of the month, between 9a.m. and 1p.m., there is a very good Farmer’s Market at Fakenham, fourth Saturday at Aylsham and third Sunday at The Green Grocers on Earlham Road in Norwich.

During the year there are various arts events put on by village residents. In the spring, autumn and winter on the third Saturday of the month the Village Hall is transformed into a cinema - the programme of films will be available at The Old Chapel. On Friday evenings throughout the year there is a bar in the Village Hall, where you can enjoy the local ales and the occasional live folk music session.

There are a number of interesting walks in the immediate vicinity of your Norfolk holiday cottage through the local fields and woods, and the village provides wonderfully secluded self-catering holiday accommodation from which to explore North Norfolk’s many attractions. The wide open sandy beaches of Holkham and Wells, the nature reserves at Cley, Saltmarsh and Pensthorpe, the Queen’s residence at Sandringham and many National Trust properties like Blickling Hall are all only a very short drive away.
