The Milligan-Manby family have farmed this land for four generations creating
a legacy of wonderful woodland and rich parkland which makes a natural habitat
for their native cattle.
Since 1892, the grass valleys surrounding Thorganby Hall in the heart of the
Lincolnshire Wolds have been home to the McTurk herd of Lincoln Red cattle.
Lincoln Red beef is distinctively succulent. It's internationally recognised
marbled texture makes it strikingly tender, flavoursome and healthy.
Thorganby Beef is available through Phipps the Butchers at Mareham-le-Fen.
Little Walk Cottage, Marris Cottage and our latest project, The Stable Wing, are
new additions to Thorganby Hall. They give the chance for other people to
experience and benefit the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds ensuring a wonderfully
relaxing break away from the stresses of everyday life.
Within Thorganby Hall grounds, right your doorstep, you can take advantage of the recently resurfaced tennis court and can relax and enjoy trout fishing (by prior arrangement) in the Thorganby Lake. Or just take a relaxing walk through the beautiful grounds and woods.
The Water Mill
The watermill was recorded in the late 19th century and was at some point
partially demolished and rebuilt to generate electricity for the hall and farm
via a line carried on poles. It is a charming and interesting rare survivor of
an estate mill adapted to a new purpose. The owners have taken a sensible view
and had a local millwright conserve the waterwheel, brickwork and the building
covering it. This work was done within the Philosophy of Repair of the Mills
Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). The Mills
Section are always pleased to see owners taking the initiative and doing such
worthy work as we are losing mills all the time, mainly to dreadful ill thought
out conversions!
Walking
If you enjoy walking, there is a woodland walk from Little Walk Cottage, and a
local footpath network. Nearby is a link to the Viking Way (7 miles), the course
of which takes you almost entirely through thinly populated countryside, quiet
villages and small market towns. The Viking Way crosses an area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, over fens, Wolds and heath land on a meandering journey across
Lincolnshire and Rutland. The walk is a total of 147 miles long but not everyone
feels up to walking the full distance and many just walk short stretches at
their own pace.
