land. They enjoy fabulous panoramic views across the Ribble Valley towards
Pendle Hill.
Awarded 5 star grading by the English Tourism Council, the cottages have been
converted to an exceptionally high standard with quality fixtures and fittings
throughout. Beautiful landscaped gardens and a large patio form an ideal place
from which to enjoy the breathtaking views.
The Trough of Bowland is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, and
you will find some of the finest walks. We also have the Forest of Bowland,
Yorkshire Dales and Lake District just a short drive away.
Clitheroe and surrounding villages have plenty of fine restaurants, and the
Norman Castle and museum are of great interest. Not far away are the ruins of a
Cistercian abbey at Sawley, also Whalley abbey and 13th century church. Also,
the magnificent Stonyhurst college, where Tolkien is believed to have taken his
inspiration for The Lord of the Rings from is well worth a visit. Clitheroe is
an excellent base from which to explore the Ribble Valley and beyond.
Fishing is available on request and is only two minutes walk from the cottages.
Horse riding is fifteen minutes drive, and golf, ten minutes away.

If your ideal holiday involves the chance to escape the bustle
of modern day living, indulge in culinary delights and relax in high quality

a desire to retire to this area of the country.
The Ribble Valley, whilst still relatively untouched by tourism has been
acknowledged by all who visit for its beauty, with its rolling hills and rivers.
Clitheroe is a quiet Market Town with its twice-weekly markets. The Norman
Castle Keep was constructed by the De Lacy family around 1186. It became a
Royalist Stronghold during the Civil War, Cromwell ordered it to be dismantled
so that it could never be used again.
In the distance is Pendle Hill; associated with the Lancashire Witches, in
nearby Newchurch-in-Pendle is the famous Witchery Shop. Edisford Bridge is a
very popular area with its Riverside Café, seating by the river, an ideal place
for the children to paddle whilst you relax.
There is a small recreation area with a miniature Railway and a Pitch and Putt.
Across the road is the Ribblesdale Swimming Pool.
Dunsop Bridge village is the nearest to the centre of the United Kingdom
according to Ordnance Survey. BT put its 100,000th phone box there in 1992 as a
mark of recognition.
The village of Downham is now familiar as the backdrop for the BBC night drama
series Born and Bred, also the famous film Whistle Down the Wind from times gone
by.
The landscape around Stonyhurst has also gained popularity through the discovery
that it may have provided inspiration for J.J.R.Tolkien’s ‘Middle Earth’ in
‘Lord of the Rings’.
