Bishop's Stortford is an old
Hertfordshire market town dating back to Norman times.
The White Stag, is the town's mascot. He is now on view outside the local book
shop.
In days gone by, the town
belonged to the Bishop of London. It still has a number of old buildings, a
castle mound and a magnificent church.
The town grew up around the River Stort from where it got its name.
There is a good range of shops and a weekly market which stretches from one end
of the town to the other.
Visitors can enjoy a cinema, bowling, swimming pool, etc and many restaurants.
The main line station provides fast trains (30 minutes) to London and Cambridge,
both towns being about 25 miles away.
The area is surrounded by rural countryside and there are many pleasant walks
along the river and around the villages.
