Norton Cottages - Two very
individual cottages tastefully created from a listed 16th Century farm building.
The cottages are set in the grounds of Norton House, which is already trading as
an award winning Bed & Breakfast. The River Wye is only a short walk away,
giving easy walking access to the whole of Symonds Yat, The Great Doward and
Little Doward. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, the location is
ideal for exploring the Wye Valley, The Royal Forest of Dean, Herefordshire and
South to Mid Wales.
Norton Cottages provide an ideal place to stay for people with a wide variety of interests:
Cottage Facilities
The Apple Store - Within living
memory Cider was made in these buildings. The Apple store was used for storage
of apples and equipment.
The stonewall in the lounge has the remains of a medieval window. The beams are
from the local forest, and complete with bark, are more than 450 years old.
This cosy accommodation is on the ground floor, comprising split level open plan lounge and dining area, fully fitted kitchen, bedroom with double bed, bathroom with walk in shower & shower seat.
The Cider Loft - Used in the
19th century as living area for farm workers making cider, with privy and
dormer windows.
With the high-pitched ceiling formed from roughly hewn trusses and rafters,
the cider loft lives up to its name. The low door frames are part of the
character!
The spacious accommodation,
is approached from the side of the hill, so although it is situated above
the Apple Store, the entrance is at garden level. Comprising: open plan
lounge, dining room and fully fitted kitchen all on one level, two steps
take you from the entrance hall into a double bedroom, bathroom with bath
and overhead shower.
The Wye Valley is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Norton House is within a few minutes walk from the River Wye at Symonds Yat West, and has views over the ‘Great Doward’ and ‘Little Doward’ hills, managed by The Forestry Commission, Woodland Trust and the four Nature Reserves on the ‘Great Doward’ are owned by Hereford Nature Trust. All this is within half a mile of the house.
For the very active, hiking,
canoeing, cycling, rock climbing or horse riding, are all close by. Walking
into Symonds Yat is easy with a footbridge and the ancient hand ferries
allowing access to Symonds Yat East and Yat Rock.
For bird watchers, peregrine falcons can be seen on the Doward and the Rock,
with the Red kite feeding stations in Wales, and the Bird of Prey Sanctuary
is nearby at Newent.
For Fishing enthusiasts the local lakes or rivers provide plenty of scope.
For Golfers, there are good golf courses at Ross on Wye, Monmouth or
Hereford, and Forest of Dean. For just relaxing and cruising around the
beautiful countryside, the Wye Valley and Royal Forest of Dean and
Herefordshire are on the doorstep, with the Severn Estuary, Brecon Beacons,
Black Mountains, Golden Valley etc, all within easy reach. This is an area
steeped in history with numerous castles and ancient monuments within a
twenty-mile radius.
