The duck pond is home to over 50 ducks and a family of moorhens. It's surrounded by wild flowers and enclosed by a child-friendly fence. There is a unique duck feeder involving a pulley system that ferries the grain over to the floating island in the middle of the duck pond. Our visitors enjoy feeding the ducks and observing the behaviour of the different duck families. |
|
Hembury Court Cottages are located down a fairly typical quiet East Devon country road, with high hedgerows, full of wild flowers on either side. The road isn't as sunken as some and is wide enough in most places for 2 cars, or where it narrows has sufficient passing places. |
The cottages are surrounded by peaceful countryside. We also have a couple of duck ponds - the one nearest the cottages has a unique duck feeder that guests enjoy using. The second duck pond is just a short stroll away away from the cottages. |

Days out at the seaside in Devon
Devon is the only county in Britain with two separate coastlines so that there are beaches in both north and south Devon.
Some of these are completely unspolit, beaches where you can go for a quiet walk, throw pebbles into the sea and sit in solitude watching the waves wash in, or enjoy man-made attractions at livelier seaside resorts that offer piers, funfairs and entertainment.
One of the advantages of taking a self-catering holiday is that you are free to eat whenever it suits you, so that you can go for days out at will, wander the coast and explore the many bays, beaches and harbours that Devon has to offer.
The beach shown above right is at Beer, about half an hour's drive from Hembury Court Cottages. A one mile walk along the coastal path takes you to to the larger town of Seaton with its wide expanse of beach. It's a walk worth undertaking for the splendid views alone.
Or, if you would like to see some of the best sunken lanes in Devon with magnificent displays of wild flowers, visit the picturesque village of Branscombe with its quaint thatched cottages tumbling down the hillside and winding road leading down to a pebble beach. The best time to visit is in May when the wildflowers are at their best and there are fewer visitors.
One of the advantages of a self-catering holiday is that you can choose to eat out or in. Some people cook breakfast only and eat meals out as they visit different places in Devon. Or, you can collect a takeway and eat it in the comfort of your own sitting room. All cottages have a microwave and cooker with full-sized oven for reheating food or ready prepared meals. There is also a fridge/freeezer in each cottage so that you can stock up on ready convenience meals if you wish.
If you prefer to go out to dinner in the evenings, there is a vast choice of eating establishments to suit every pocket and taste. Our 'local' the Drewe Arms in the thatched village of Broadhembury is shown on the right.
Each cottage contains a restaurant guide and Robert and Mandy will be pleased to advise about local restaurants and pubs based on their own and other guests' experience. For many of us, one of the joys of going on holiday is being able to dine out frequently and sample regional cuisine.
