Mallard Cottage - The self catering accommodation is decorated and equipped to a high standard and comprises 2 double bedrooms and 2 shower rooms, living room with dining area and fully fitted well equipped kitchen and shared laundry room with environmentally friendly washing machine, tumble-dryer and airer.

Mallard Cottage is a Grade II Listed Georgian Building, parts of which are reputed to date back to 1719. The cottage was previously occupied by Beatrice Forder and her sister, Mildred. Beatrice rebound the Winchester Bible (currently on display in the Cathedral) into its present four volumes.

The cottage accommodation is situated on Chesil Street, an area of Winchester formerly known as Cheese Hill, just outside the city walls. From the cottage, you can see the Wolvesey Palace and Wolvesey Castle, the present and former residences of the Bishop of Winchester.

As you wander through the garden, which leads down to the River Itchen, you can relax in our summerhouse, or enjoy the views of England's first Capital City, nestling in the valley. From the garden, you can look out at Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College, and across the city beyond.

At the bottom of the garden, flows the River Itchen. The river, to quote from Barry Shurlock's 'The Winchester Story', "served Winchester's many mills, most of which were owned by the Bishop", and, indeed, runs between two of them as it passes around the Wolvesey Castle walls.

Our guests can expect to find a warm welcome and comfortable self-catering accommodation as part of our family home.

The bedrooms offered as guest accommodation are each provided with tea/coffee making facilities, TV/video, radio alarm clock & hairdryer. Dressing gowns and slippers. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel. All bed linen. Hand towels and bath sheets.

Bedroom 1 is a double bedroom with an en-suite shower room/WC/electric shaver point leading via hallway to

Bedroom 2 is a double bedroom with a private shower room/WC/Electric shaver point.

Both bedrooms have views over the garden to the River Itchen and Wolvesey Castle and the Bishop's Palace beyond

Guests may also make use of the peaceful riverside garden and summerhouse with heating and light.

Part of the guest lounge/dining room is pictured here (right). There is also a fully fitted and well-equipped kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, ceramic hob, electric oven, refrigerator, and toaster. The shared utility room has automatic washing machine and sensor tumble-drier together with a clothes airer.
