Gable Cottage is a 250 year old two bedroom cottage in historic Wraggs Row. Its architectural and historic significance have been recognised by English Heritage by giving it a Grade 2 listing. With exposed beams, low ceilings, flagstone floors, and gabled bedroom windows, it is full of original character and charm but now has all the comforts and conveniences of modern day living, such as central heating, a modern kitchen with AGA, and a new contemporary bathroom.
With 2 double bedrooms, Gable Cottage has luxurious accommodation for 4 people. An extra folding bed can be put up in the main bedroom for a 5th person if required.
Just a 3 minute walk to the town square, Gable Cottage is in the ideal place from which to explore the history, the outstanding pubs and restaurants, the antique shops and the quality shopping that Stow has to offer.
Many iconic Cotswold villages such as Bourton on the Water, the Slaughters or Moreton in Marsh are less than 10 minutes drive.
Further afield Stratford upon Avon, Blenheim Palace and Oxford are easily reached. Cheltenham, home of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is only a half an hours drive.
Parking is free on Wraggs Row access road outside the cottage.
Gable Cottage is usually let for a minimum of 7 nights but at certain times of the year, is available for short breaks of 3 or 4 nights. ( See availability) For self catering holidays or short breaks, Gable Cottage is your perfect home away from home for your visit to the Cotswolds.
Between the lounge and kitchen is the attractive dining room, just the place for a family breakfast or dining in style in the evening if you don’t want to try another of the great restaurants in Stow.
In the modern kitchen, the new AGA stove makes cooking a real pleasure, as well as radiating a cosy glow 24 hours a day, even in the depths of winter. Of course it is not really necessary for warmth, as the whole cottage is centrally heated-yet its comforting warmth will make you feel nicely at home. Neither is the AGA strictly necessary for cooking, as the kitchen is fully equipped with a mini electric oven, and microwave. The kitchen also has a washing machine and a dishwasher.
From the lounge a narrow staircase leads up to the two bedrooms on the first floor. Don’t be concerned if the walls seem to lean at strange angles and the floors seem to slope in every direction. It’s not that last glass of merlot, just 18th century timbers gently settling in! The main bedroom has a comfortable double bed. There is room for an extra single bed if needed. The other bedroom has luxurious twin beds that can be put together as a super-king double if requested in advance.
The contemporary bathroom opens off the landing on the first floor, with toilet, basin and shower over the bath.
A private and sheltered courtyard garden opens off the kitchen and dining room perfect for summer barbeques or relaxing in the evening.
Stow on the Wold is the highest town in the Cotswolds, lying on the route of the ancient Roman road, the Fosse Way. The church tower of 15th century St Edwards parish church is visible for miles around. Dating back to medieval times, Stow rose to prosperity on the back of the wool trade. The Royalist Hotel in Digbeth St built in 947 AD is said to be the oldest inn in England. The old wooden stocks still stand in the market square but no longer are miscreants placed in them to be pelted with rotten eggs by their fellow citizens. Today the market square boasts many fine pubs, restaurants and cafes. If shopping is your thing, you will find antique shops, art shops, book shops and specialty shops to keep you browsing all day.
