Cumbria self catering holiday cottages

Parkergate is a wonderful former working Cumbrian farm, set in beautiful surroundings, with outstanding views towards Bassenthwaite Lake and towards Ullock Pike, Skiddaw and the Northern Fells of Cumbria.

We have four quality self catering holiday cottages available within a recently converted barn, plus The Stable, a newly converted ground floor cottage with disabled friendly access & bathroom all with outstanding views of the surrounding fells and countryside.

The main house itself was built in 1767 and is a Grade II Listed Building.

Parkergate has a peaceful location near to Bassenthwaite village, just a few miles from Keswick in the Northern Fells of the Lake District National Park.

It is an ideal base for exploring all Lakes, the Solway Coast, the historic border city of Carlisle and even Hadrian's Roman Wall. We must have one of the best locations in the whole of Cumbria for enjoying the spectacular Lakeland sunsets over the North West fells.

There are regular public transport services available between the major towns and fell walking and cycle routes are all on your doorstep.

We, Ian and Jane Phillips would like to welcome you to our home and make your time in the Lake District as enjoyable as possible. For a peaceful, relaxing stay away from it all in simple, cosy luxury, Parkergate is a wonderful place to spend some time in Cumbria.

Until relatively recently, Parkergate was a typical Cumbrian working farm. It is still surrounded by fields of sheep and cattle. The farmhouse has a long history dating back to the 18th century and has retained much of its original character.

Across the farmyard stands a traditional stone bank barn, which we have carefully converted into self-catering holiday cottages, each with its own distinct character and truly magnificent outlook. Attached to this we have The Stable, ideal for guests who want ground floor accommodation which is disabled friendly.

We have been at pains to preserve the essential character of the exterior while transforming the interior into the simple cosy luxury you, as the discerning visitor to Lakeland, will fully appreciate.

Lying at the foot of Ullock Pike, "the peak where wolves play", Parkergate nestles under the rugged grandeur of Skiddaw and overlooks lush meadows and woodland to Bassenthwaite Lake and the Western Fells beyond.

There is excellent walking to be had from Parkergate itself and other memorable walks are easily accessible. We're at the foot of Ullock Pike which leads up onto Skiddaw for stunning views of the area.

As well as this, there are many other pursuits available locally including sailing, windsurfing & canoeing on Derwentwater (Bassenthwaite is Sailing Club only), climbing in Borrowdale, fishing, horse riding, paragliding, and bird watching. Or you can just be lazy and enjoy looking out at the countryside and the sunsets!

Ian and Jane live in the main farmhouse. There is ample off road parking available and we also have a drying room for any items getting wet during your excursion of the day.

We will provide you with as much - or as little - help as you want to ensure your ideal Lake District holiday. We can advise on many local walks and activities available in the vicinity if you wish.

Parkergate is extremely fortunate to be in a wonderful quiet location in the North Lakes of Cumbria, surrounded by magnificent Lakeland Fells and beautiful lake scenery. There is so much to do no matter what your interests are.

Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater are both close by and provide excellent water sports opportunities, though Derwentwater is more accessible for general use. Derwentwater Marina offers windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, rowing and powered boats for hire as well as tuition. Bassenthwaite Sailing Club offers the opportunity for more experienced sailing for guests with their own sailing dinghy.

The walking around this part of the Lake District National Park is second to none. Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Northern Caldbeck Fells and Coledale Fells are all in close proximity and it is possible to climb Skiddaw direct from Parkergate. For the less energetic, there are lovely walks around the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake and along the River Derwent, as well as lower, easier peaks such as Dodd and Binsey.

Parkergate is located not far from the well known Lake District Ospreys' nesting site. Cumbria's most popular birds returned safely to the area in 2008 following a hazardous 3,000 mile migration flight from East Africa. The famous pair has been re-united at Bassenthwaite Lake, and the birds have arrived back at the nest site they have used for the last four years. They can be viewed on the Osprey Project website - or even better, you can stay here and watch them virtually fly right past the window on their way to a favourite fishing site at Overwater!!

The view point at Dodd Wood is just down the road from us, where there are powerful telescopes available to view the magnificent birds fishing. You can also take in the Dodd Wood Forest Trails.

There are many other attractions to enjoy locally too, including Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick, the Pencil Museum, Honister Slate Mine, Trotters World of Animals and Rheged Discovery Centre.

Keswick town centre itself, with its shops, restaurants and inns is only 7 miles away and we have a regular bus service on our road.

The nearest pub to Parkergate is the Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite village which is 1.5 miles from Parkergate provides very good pub food at reasonable prices. The Snooty Fox at Uldale 4 miles away is quieter than the Sun. Lyzzick Hall is 3 miles towards Keswick and is terrific for special meals out.

All these walks start from Parkergate and are written up in some detail in a folder in each holiday cottage:

  1. A short walk down the bridle way to Moss-Side, Mireside and back takes about 45 minutes. Can be muddy but lovely views all the way.

  2. Down to the shores of Bassenthwaite lake via Moss-Side, Broadness, Scarness, Mireside and Parkergate meadows. Takes 1-2 hours depending on how long you linger by the lake.

  3. To St. Bega's church via Moss-Side, Scarness Road, the church, lakeside, Ravonstone and home. About 2 hours easy walking and lots of interest as you go.

  4. Mirehouse and St Bega's church. Another walk along similar routes but returning through Dodd wood and past the Osprey view point. In summer, we are lucky enough to have a pair of breeding ospreys that return each year to breed. You may be lucky enough to see them!

  5. Dodd summit. An easy climb to a fantastic view about 3 hours walking and reaching 1,500 feet. Most of this walk is in trees so is very good for poor days. The actual summit is very exposed and can be windy but the view makes it all worth while.

  6. Up to the ridge. via High Side, Southerndale, the ridge behind Parkergate, and back via Ravenstone. A good walk giving lovely views of the lake and hills around takes about one and a half hours. On a clear day you can really enjoy an exhilarating walk without too much effort and see so much.

  7. Ullock Pike and back by Whitestones and Dodd.
    A continuation of Walk 6

  8. Skiddaw summit continuing from Walk 7.

  9. The chapel beck round via Mireside, Bassenthwaite cross roads, Chapel Beck, Orthwaite road. Another shortish walk from Parkergate around the local meadows. Takes about an hour.

  10. Around Skiddaw.
This is not a demanding walk but offers excellent views and quiet paths.
