Bessiestown is a luxurious retreat, in the heart of Border
Reiver country - the Debatable Lands - a relaxing and refreshing base from which
to explore some of the most beautiful countryside in northern England. The
Border City of Carlisle, the Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder Water and
Forest, Solway Coast as well as Gretna Green, famous the world over for romantic
weddings and the Borders of Scotland are all in easy reach. The landscape on the
doorstep is well worth exploring too.

Bessiestown is ideally placed as a stop over on the way to or from Scotland but take our advice and make yours a longer stay - so many visitors in the past have come back time after time to explore the local countryside and to enjoy our hospitality.
Situated around an attractive paved courtyard with hanging baskets and flower troughs are two tastefully converted spacious self-catering cottages.
Adjoining the guesthouse is the Barn Cottages. Which have central heating and are tastefully decorated throughout as well as being laid out to make the most of the beautiful views.
The entrance hall leads to two spacious ground-floor bedrooms – one with a double bed, wardrobe and dressing table, vanity wash basin unit and easy chair. The second bedroom has twin beds, fitted wardrobe and vanity wash basin unit. The bathroom is next to the bedrooms and has a toilet, wash basin and bath with shower over. A patio door leads out on to a paved patio with picnic table and chairs and a lawned area with fields beyond where sheep, horses and our rare breed pet pig graze. The views stretch as far as the eye can see over Scottish Border countryside. There is no passing traffic – just wide open space and wonderful sunsets.
A spiral staircase leads to an inviting open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area. This is well furnished and carpeted and has a comfortable lounge suite, colour TV and video and a day bed for an extra guest. The kitchen has recently-fitted units, a fridge, electric cooker and microwave. There is plenty of good quality glassware, crockery and cutlery – everything in place, ensuring a relaxing and care-free holiday.
The Stable Cottage is opposite the guest house and of the
same high standard as the Barn Cottages. There are two bedrooms on the ground
floor - a double room with en-suite shower room. A spacious double room with
twin room and extra folding sofa bed and private bathroom. Patio doors lead out
onto paved seating area which enjoys similar extensive views. An open pine
staircase leads up to the open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area.
Bed linen and towels are provided.
Riding can
be arranged at local riding centres. Experienced and inexperienced riders
catered for. Half hour to daily treks and stable management days.
We offer a farm trail of about 2 miles which takes you through our beautiful meadows, woodland and local lanes to see something of the scenery and wildlife that surrounds Bessiestown. There are also plenty of other walks, from family rambles to more strenuous hikes, and there are experts available if you prefer an accompanied walk with a knowledgeable local guide.
Bessiestown is an ideal base for cycling, golfing, fishing, bird watching and touring.
Just north of Carlisle and within easy driving distance of both the M6 and M74, Bessiestown Farm is an ideal base for exploring the Lake District, the Borderlands and Southern Scotland and the Solway and Galloway coasts.
Carlisle, Keilder Water and the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site are all a short drive away and Gretna Green is close by for the romantics among our guests.
Add to this the idyllic surrounding countryside and birdlife, quiet lanes for cycling and tremendous choice of walking opportunities and Bessiestown Farm could be just the location you need for a holiday break.
“(The
ten of us) were all surprised by the variety of things to interest in the area
and all agreed that the walking was superb. Our only regret was that we didn’t
have more time to explore this very scenic area. One of our favourite walks was
right from your door and we also enjoyed the walk you recommended on the
Solway Firth
and our trip to Hadrian’s Wall. We are certainly glad we chose to come for a
longer stay.”
