As a self-catering holiday cottage, Honeypot Cottage in Upper Teesdale is a haven of absolute tranquillity. It is a former traditional farmhouse in the unspoiled countryside of Harwood-in-Teesdale, not far upstream from Middleton-in-Teesdale and Barnard Castle. Surrounded by the breathtaking views, farms and moorland in Teesdale, this cosy cottage is a haven for walkers, cyclists, bird watchers, botanists and for those that love the countryside. The living room has an open coal fire and traditional beamed ceilings. There are also stunning views, particularly from the bedroom windows. It is an ideal base to explore Northumbria, the Durham and Yorkshire Dales and the cities of Newcastle and Durham. Upper Teesdale is stunning all year round and Honeypot Cottage is available throughout the seasons.
We operate Peghorn Lodge Farm, Widdy Bank Farm and Seavy Hill Farm, all of which are owned by Lord Barnard. We run suckler cows and calves, pedigree Galloway cows and calves, plus Swaledale sheep. From here you will be able to enjoy a walk to Cow Green reservoir and along its shoreline Nature Trail to the breath-taking Cauldron Snout, England's longest and most impressive cascade. From here you can continue down the edge of Widdy Bank Fell, where our sheep graze, through to Widdy Bank Farm where you will see our Galloway cattle graze. Here can be seen the rare and famous Blue Gentian wild flower that is a relic of the Ice Age. Amongst the facilities and services that are available are: 1. Being located in one of Britain's most beautiful and tranquil areas, Honeypot Cottage provides an excellent location for exploration of the numerous landforms of national significance and the remarkable historic sites. However, for those visitors who wish to use the cottage as a base for wider exploration, there is a tremendous experience awaiting. To the north can be found Hadrian's Wall, the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water. To the west can be found the Pennine scarp overlooking the Eden Valley to the nearby towering Lake District National Park. To the south can be found Herriot Country and the treasures of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. To the east can be found the railway heritage centres of Shildon and Darlington, plus the world-famous Durham Cathedral and Castle. To the north-east can be found the excellent shopping experiences to be found at Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Metro Centre.
There are many attractions in the Teesdale and Upper Teedale area and the wider region, but a few of the more local include; HighForce Waterfall and Picnic Area The largest waterfall in England. Cauldron Snout Cascade A 60 metre / 200 foot cascade down dolerite steps with surrounding plant species that have survived since the last ice age. Bowlees Visitor Centre and Picnic Area Situated in an old chapel where you can find out about wildlife and the landscape of Teesdale. There is also a nature trail. Barnard Castle and The Bowes Museum In this historic market town you can visit the internationally-famous Bowes Museum with its wealth and variety of treasures. Gibsons Cave This is primarily a waterfall, Summerhill Force, but the undercutting has been so severe that it resembles a cave. Well worth a visit. However, there are many more attractions within a short distance, including Bernard's Castle, Bowes Castle, Brough Castle, Raby Castle, the Killhope Lead Mining Centre, Nenthead Leadmine, Parkers' Kilns, Hartside Viewpoint, South Tynedale Railway, the Otter Trust, the Dales Centre, Hamsterley Forest....plus a range of activities too
