Boot & Shoe Cottage - If you are looking for a quiet get-away-from-it-all weekend for 2 or a longer family stay in some of England's most beautiful surroundings, close to Barnard Castle, Durham and the Yorkshire dales, then Boot and Shoe Cottage is just the place for you.  We offer a warm welcome with a roaring log fire and home baking, books, videos and games for adults and children alike, comfy sofas and country antique furniture; a true home-from-home.

Outside, the River Tees (private trout fishing available) with kingfishers, duck, geese and trout off the back garden and fields with horses, sheep and rabbits to the front.  A short walk through the wood brings you to our all weather tennis court.

Wycliffe is 6 miles from Barnard Castle in the heart of Teesdale, part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one of England's least spoilt and most beautiful areas.  It offers something for everyone - gentle walks or the rugged Pennine Way, Bowes Museum and Raby Castle, traditional market towns and villages with shops and antiques, bird watching, sports and more.  The Yorkshire Dales and Durham are close by and further afield are York, Newcastle and the Lake District.

The historic Boot & Shoe Cottage lies on the southern bank of the River Tees at an ancient river crossing from Yorkshire into Durham. It offers 4 star accommodation for self-catering holidays in the heart of Teesdale, near Barnard Castle and close to the Yorkshire Dales, with private fishing and tennis court.  Walkers and cyclists are welcomed.

The cottage, once a cobblers and pub, has now been restored to a high standard with original wall cupboards,  beams and fireplaces retained.  The date stone on the now internal stained glass window is 1761. 

Why "Boot and Shoe"?  The sign (far right) was found when the roof was being repaired in the 1950s!

It is a cottage of enormous character but with all modern facilities.

There are several excellent pubs nearby, with the 2 closest featuring in the Michelin "Eating out in Pubs Guide 2009".  The Bridge Inn is a 10 minute walk and The Oak Tree is a 5 minute drive.

Barnard Castle has a wide selection of local shops, including several specialising in antiques, a weekly market, a farmers' market, banks and post office and the Bowes Museum.  The nearest farm shop is about 2 miles away

Barnard Castle is connected by bus to Darlington(train station), Durham and Richmond. There are also buses serving upper Teesdale and the north Pennines.  The nearest bus stop is a 10 minute walk.

Boot & Shoe Cottage is a 4 star, self-catering holiday cottage near Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Durham Dales and can accommodate 4 (or 6) guests.

The cottage is well furnished with country antiques and paintings and photographs of local landmarks adorn the walls.

Relax in the atmospheric sitting room, with its open fire and comfy sofas and view over the front garden and fields. There are masses of books and games, videos and DVDs, maps and information on the local area.

A utility room and extra WC are also on the ground floor.

Enjoy your meals whilst watching the River Tees flow by. The fully equipped kitchen / dining room has a wood burning stove and French windows opening on to the garden, with barbecue and steps down to the riverbank.

Upstairs are two bedrooms - a large double bedroom with ancient oak headboard, and an attic-style bedroom with one standard and one small (2' 6") single beds. Both rooms are comfortably furnished with cotton bed linen and feather and down bedding (synthetic available).

The upstairs bathroom has a shower over the bath and towels are provided.

The cottage provides the perfect location for a relaxing self-catering holiday in peaceful and scenic surroundings. From strolling through Wycliffe to exploring Barnard Castle, experiencing Teesdale's High Force, visiting Raby Castle, fishing in the River Tees, walking the North Yorkshire Dales to driving out to Newcastle or York, you will be ideally situated for a wonderful holiday in the countryside.

Boot and Shoe Cottage is 400 yds west of Wycliffe Village, birthplace of John Wycliffe, the first translator of the Bible into English.  St Mary's Church, Wycliffe dates from the 12th century.

Set in the heart of Teesdale, one of England's most beautiful and unspoilt areas, Wycliffe is about 6 miles east of the historic market town of Barnard Castle and makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding country.

Teesdale has many small villages and is also home to the John and Josephine The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle, High Force - England's highest waterfall and the medieval stronghold of Raby Castle with it's deer park.

The area offers opportunities for many outdoor activities, including walking with the Teesdale Way passing close by, golfing, bird watching and riding. Rods on the River Tees can be rented, either by the day or weekly, to take advantage of the excellent trout fishing available with Boot and Shoe Cottage.  There is an all weather tennis court for guests use.
