Aldermoor Cottages, Camelford, Cornwall

Just outside Camelford, on the fringe of the wild moors is a long, country lane, once used by smugglers traveling from Trebarwith Strand to Jamaica Inn. Follow that peaceful lane through the trees and past the fields and just as the whole world seems to have been left behind, you will find Aldermoor Farm, nestling in a hollow, offering you privacy, amity and a truly relaxing break.

Aldermoor Farm has garnered more than 300 years worth of secrets since it was built by moorland dwellers from local stones. Soaked in the colourful history of this area, it offers a perfect holiday experience: a combination of unrivalled tranquility and unending diversion.

Aldermoor is a small grassland farm on the edge of Bodmin Moor and we have lived and farmed here for the past 30 years. The earliest known record of Aldermoor was found on a map dated 1742 in Lanhydrock, although it probably existed many years before that date.

We used to run a small herd of suckler cows and a flock of sheep, together with an array of other livestock such as pigs, geese and chickens. There are many funny stories that can be told about our animals.

We now let the grass to our neighbours and it is stocked with cattle in the summer months and sheep in the winter. And there is still an ever-increasing menagerie of fur and feathers, both domestic and wild for you to enjoy and more opportunities to immerse yourself in country living than you could wish for.

The cottages were originally moorland homes, converted many years ago into holiday accommodation. Over the years we have done our bit to enhance the comfort and cosiness of the accommodation they now provide.

We feel we can offer our guests something truly special – a relaxing holiday with comfortable, homely accommodation surrounded by the best that nature has to offer in a beautiful part of the country.

The Old Barn
Adjacent to the farmhouse, this single storey granite barn has been converted and renovated to provide comfortable, spacious accommodation for two people (or perhaps a couple and a baby).

The open plan living area is bright and airy with vaulted ceiling and a magnificent corner fireplace that houses a wood-burning stove. There is a lounge area, dining area and fully equipped galley-style kitchen.

From the living area, a passage with a few steps leads to the bedroom with a lovely four-poster bed and modern en suite bathroom. Another door from the living room leads onto a small patio with garden furniture and a barbecue

Primrose Cottage
Thick stone walls, deep window recesses, leaded windows and beamed ceilings, Primrose is another lovely example of a traditional Cornish cottage. Thoughtfully updated to make the most of the space, Primrose Cottage is very different in style from its neighbour.

A small entrance hall leads into a kitchen diner, which cleverly incorporates the under-stairs area and has its sink built into a delightful window recess that overlooks the garden.

The separate sitting room has a large granite fireplace that houses a real-effect electric woodstove and upstairs is a charming double room with a four poster and a bedroom with bunk beds and space for an optional additional small single. The family sized bathroom is on the ground floor.

Sarah's Cottage
This traditional old cottage has a truly romantic feel – with thick granite walls, exposed beams, low upstairs ceilings and a wood-burning stove in the large, original Cornish fireplace that once housed a range.

A bow window looks out across a lawn from the living room, which has open plan lounge, dining area and kitchen in an L-shape. The bathroom with separate toilet, is also on the ground floor, while upstairs is the double bedroom with a beautifully trimmed four poster bed and an L-shaped twin room – both with sloping wood ceilings and lovely views across the garden

Being so tucked away from it all we try to provide everything for your convenience so you need not leave unless you want to. We offer our guests:

A games room with a table tennis table, small snooker table and a variety of games, toys, books and jigsaw puzzles
Each cottage has its own patio with garden furniture and there is a static barbecue with a seating area in the shared garden for Primrose and Sarah’s Cottages
A patio area outside the games room
A laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron, ironing board and communal freezer
Plenty of car parking space
Duvets, TV, video, radio and CD player in all cottages
Cot and highchair available on request
Babysitting service (on request)
Saturday changeover: arrival after 3pm, departure by 10am

Pets are welcome on the understanding that they are kept under control at all times and are not left unsupervised in the cottages.

If you would like to venture slightly further than the garden, there are wonderful walks and footpaths across the farm and the surrounding area with lots of opportunities for wildlife and bird watching. The moors are easily accessible on foot and there are some lovely villages nearby – St Teath and St Breward for instance – with wonderful village pubs and a proper Cornish atmosphere.

Aldermoor Farm is very central for exploring all of Cornwall and North Devon but you don’t have to go very far to find some wonderful ways to spend your time. We are close to the haunting moors, yet only minutes away from the lovely surfing beaches of the rugged Atlantic coast. The old market town of Camelford is 11/2 miles away; King Arthur’s Tintagel and the picturesque harbours of Port Isaac and Boscastle are within easy reach and the golden sands of Trebarwith Strand are less than 7 miles.

There is an 18-hole golf course just a mile away and Crowdy Reservoir if you enjoy fishing. Sea fishing trips, riding and moorland pony trekking, national cycle trails, National Trust houses and gardens are all available in the immediate area. However you choose to spend your time, Aldermoor will be waiting to relax you when you return
