We are 1 hour from junction 27, M5. Take the North Devon link road - A361 at junction 27 to Barnstaple, then follow the signs to Ilfracombe, when approaching Ilfracombe from Barnstaple, turn left at the first set of traffic lights, sign posted 'Sea Front', carry straight on at the next set of lights. This road leads to the sea front you will observe the Landmark theatre with it's conical towers on the left hand side. Carry straight on, passing St James Church, which stands in it's own grounds on the right hand side. Approximately 100 yds past the church (where the road appears as a 'T' junction.) Turn right go straight ahead (without turning off right or left) After approx. 100 yds the roar bears to the left and you will find The Admiral's House on the right, overlooking the harbour.
Apart from a handful of fishermen's
cottages, The Admiral's House was once the only property overlooking the now
famous Ilfracombe Harbour.
The picturesque town grew around a tiny fishing village but the Admiral's House
has commanded its position over the sheltered port since 1720. Originally the
Manor House, the site dates from Norman days and has been held at different
times by the Champernounes, Martyns, Greys, Sir Philip Sydney, Audleys and the
Bourchier Wrey family. The listed Georgian house occupies the site once
dominated by Ilfracombe's ancient castle and, in the recent conversion and
loving refurbishment, an underground passage has been discovered which led from
the quay to the castle!
